Tiger population falls below 1411 in 2010

New Delhi: As many as 11 tigers were killed in the country in the first two months of this year, taking the tiger population even below the official figures of 1,411, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said on Monday.

Five tigers were killed in various tiger reserves in the country in January and February while six were killed during the same period in forests, Ramesh told the Rajya Sabha in response to a question.

The minister said that 66 tigers were killed - 17 due to poaching - in the country last year.

"Of these, 46 were killed inside tiger reserves while 20 were killed in forests," he said.

Ramesh also apprised the house about the steps taken by his ministry for protection and conservation of tigers in the country.
