New Delhi: A fresh controversy has erupted in Jammu and Kashmir after anti-national, pro-militant and pro-Pakistan slogans were allegedly raised at a separatist rally on Sunday.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police lodged an FIR against Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani for an anti-national speech, raising provocative slogans and holding a public meeting at Eidgah without prior permission.
Geelani returned to the Valley after a renal surgery in Mumbai and was greeted by thousands of supporters on Sunday who reportedly waved Islamic flags and shouted pro-freedom slogans.
Unconfirmed reports say banned flags of militant outfits like Lashkar-e-Toiba and the Hizbul Mujahideen were openly displayed at the rally.
At the meeting Geelani said his party would settle for nothing less than complete freedom from India. It was Hurriyat hardliner's first public meeting this year in downtown Srinagar.
The presence of a masked youth led to rumours about the presence of an unarmed militant at the rally.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police has lodged an FIR against Geelani for his anti-national speech. Geelani and his Hurriyat colleagues Ashraf Sehrai, Masarat Alam, Saleem Geelani and Shafi Lone have been booked under section 13 of the unlawful activities act.
However, senior police officers said there was no display of arms and ammunition, and no flag of any banned militant outfit had been spotted at the rally.
They said flags, bearing religious writings, of several parties from different areas of the Kashmir valley were displayed at the public meeting.
