Jamaat to move International Court on UN ban

CNN-IBN

Islamabad: Pakistani Government has begun a crackdown on the Jamaat-ud-Dawa after the United Nations Security Council declared it a terrorist organisation.

The Jammat is a front for the terrorist outfit Laskhar-e-Toiba, which has masterminded the Mumbai terror attack and is also accused of being involved in many other terror strikes across India.

Pakistan authorities have already sealed 19 offices of Jamaat and detained 25 office bearers of the organisation.

According to reports Jammat chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed has been put under house arrest for three months. Detention orders have also been issued against seven other Jamaat leaders and 122 activists have been put on the Exit Control List, which means they cannot leave Pakistan.

All the bank accounts of the Jamaat and its leaders have been frozen and a ban has been imposed on airing any news or information of the outlawed groups.

The State Bank of Pakistan directed all banks to freeze the bank accounts of Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, who is a former professor of engineering who has directed terrorism operations in India. The others in the list are Zakiur-Rehman Lakhvi, chief of operations of LeT, Haji Muhammad Ashraf, chief of finance of LeT and Bahaziq Mahmoud, alias, Abu Abdul Aziz, financier of LeT.

The measures have been taken after the UN declared the Jamaat a terrorist group on Wednesday.

However, the Jamaat intends to move to International Court of Justice calling the ban as unfair. Saeed has said that the Jamaat will fight the ban. It is also writing a letter to UNSC for seeking clarification and proof.

"I think this is very painful thing. On one hand this is an attack on Pakistan while on the other hand it is an attack on Islam as well as on religious organisations. Basically they are trying to stop our charity work. In these circumstances we think we have a right to give an answer to this negative propaganda and we will not accept the blame on the basis of Indian propaganda," Saeed said.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister's adviser on interior affairs Rehman Malik claims that Pakistan is complying with the ban.
