New Delhi: The Supreme Court’s stay order on the 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in elite educational institutions has received an unusual reaction from Jan Morcha leader VP Singh, a staunch supporter of the reservation system.
Singh, who as Prime Minister brought in the Mandal committee’s recommendations, has called for a referendum on OBC quota to solve the matter.
Disagreeing with the Supreme Court’s ruling, Singh said, “The Centre should have handled it in a proper manner. I totally disagree with the SC’s remarks. It is not a vote bank politics.”
After Singh’s first salvo on the SC ruling, he then explained that the quota controversy can be put to an end by “letting the people decide and not the courts.”
“There should be a census of OBCs. But till that time an interim system should be in place. We should have referendum on the OBC quota. Let the people decide and not courts. Let referendum decide the quota issue,” Singh said.
Singh’s Jan Morcha party, which is contesting in the UP Assembly elections, has demanded reservations for backward sections of the society and Dalit Muslims.
