New Delhi: The Bhakra Nangal dam authorities have banned the entry of visitors inside the Bhakra Nangal Dam complex.
This measure has been taken following a threat perception that Lashkar operatives in Pakistan could target the project.
This is based on intercepts of a telephonic conversation of LeT operatives in Pakistan.
Authorities have requested for CISF over to secure the dam from terrorist attacks.
A CISF team is set to visit the dam to assess the situation.
Situated in village Bhakra, the Bhakra Dam is touted as the biggest dam in Asia. It is a concrete gravity dam across the Sutlej River, near the border between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh in northern India.
The 90 km long reservoir created by the Bhakra Nangal Dam is spread over an area of 168 sq km.
Damage to the dam would bring disaster to thousands of villages downstream, hit crop production and cause immense damages to life and livestock.
