Pune: Actor Sanjay Dutt, who was sentenced to six years in jail for the 1993 Mumbai blasts, spent his first night at Pune’s Yerawada Jail on Thursday after he withdrew his request to stay in a Mumbai jail.
The actor was shifted from Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail in a heavily guarded van, a far cry from the Ferrari parked in Dutt's Pali Hill home. Family members, including his partner Maanyata, followed his convoy to Pune.
Despite the security concern, hundreds of fans greeted the actor when he arrived in Pune.
Dutt is housed in a special cell in the Yerawada Jail and entry will be restricted to listed officers only. Once Dutt was taken inside the jail, he went in for a medical check up, followed by a meeting with higher officials.
The actor is placed in solitary confinement in an oval-shaped high security cell. The cell, which has an attached bath and toilet, is coupled with nine other cells in a barrack guarded by 10 policemen.
But that's where the differences end. Dutt will have to adopt the same routine followed by all other prisoners.
Normally a late riser, Dutt will have to wake up at five in the morning every day. He will then attend Vipassna or meditation sessions followed by breakfast, which will consist of upma and tea.
Dutt will have to choose between one of the many jobs done by convicts, including carpentry and tailoring, to fulfill the sentence of Rigorous Imprisonment.
Officials say that Dutt has been moved to Pune, mainly for security reasons, and to keep him away from the likes of gangsters like Abu Salem and Mustafa Dossa.
The Yerawada Jail also houses some other convicts from the 1993 blasts case, as well as high-profile prisoners like stamp paper scamster Abdul Karim Telgi.
