New Delhi: Former Delhi municipal councillor and Congress leader, Sharda Jain has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her colleague and alleged lover in August 2002.
Sharda Jain's brother Raj Kumar Jain, ex-village head of Chajjupur in Ghaziabad, Roshan Singh, Rajender and hired killers Nirvikar and Puspender have also been sentenced to life. They had been convicted under the Arms Act.
Sharda has been fined Rs 35,000 apart from the life sentence. The others have been fined Rs 10,000 each.
Three UP police officials - Shripal, Satyendra and Rakesh - who were also found guilty of destruction of evidence by the court have been sentenced to three years imprisonment.
In addition to the sentence, they have been fined Rs 5,000 each.
Sharda Jain's defence counsel has decided to appeal in the High Court against the judgement.
Sharda Jain and Gupta were Congress members of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and were allegedly having an affair. However, Jain had thought that Gupta, 50, was cheating was cheating on her and got him killed.
A Sessions Court held Jain guilty on two charges of kidnapping and murder.
Gupta, who represented the Tri Nagar ward, disappeared in August 24 and his body was found in Western UP later. He attended a public meeting of Congress President Sonia Gandhi in Delhi and was last seen travelling with Sharda in her car.
Gupta reportedly brought Sharda, a former school headmistress, into politics and helped her get a Congress ticket for the corporation elections in 2002.
The MCD suspended Sharda Jain, councillor from Keshav Puram, in February 2004, citing that she had been absent from the House without intimation for three months.
