London: When you have Girish Karnad as the writer, Lilette Dubey as the director and wedding as the theme, it's bound to be a class act. The Wedding Album, a comedy satire, is Lilette Dubey's 24th theatrical production. After premiering in Mumbai last year, the play is currently on a week's tour in London.
"This (theatre) is what gets me going. It inspires me, nourishes me, allows me to do films. If I didn't have this, I couldn't do cinema. i just couldn't," says Lilette.
The Wedding Album centres around a middle class nadkarni family, which is 'arranging' a marriage for their 22-year-old daughter, Vidula, to an NRI. The search for the 'suitable' boy, however, reveals the family's other secrets. Each member seems to have a double image and a hidden life.
Actor Ira Dubey, who plays Vidula, says, "It's a normal family in the first half but then you discover their other side."
Adds actor Suchitra Pillai, "I play Hema, the sister who is the more confident of the two, yet she has decided to just be a housewife, have kids, married a banker."
Actor Sarchit Puranik, who plays Rohit, says, "You'll see the women crying and getting all emotional, but the brother is distant, but vulnerable. He is ambitious. He is the one who is telling the story of his sister's wedding as a reality TV show."
The play has already completed over 65 shows across India and abroad.
