New Delhi: Soon after 64-year-old Darshan Lal retired as a sub-inspector from Delhi Police, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment on charges of corruption last year.

Lal is now trying to make a difference - he is now part of Tihar's 'padho aur padhao' scheme and is playing teacher to Tihar's 2000 illiterate inmates.

Ramchandra Singh, a Delhi police Head constable, serving a three years imprisonment also on charges of corruption, says this will do more than just educate them.

Others like Sandeep Singh, an inmate, who studied from Tihar's open school are chipping in as well.

What makes this initiative stand out is the fact that its a compulsory 65 days programme. Officials say that on any given day around 150 prisoners come to Tihar and the goal is to include all of them in this literacy drive.

Tihar Jail DG Neeraj Kumar sai, "There's a direct link between their illiteracy, unemployment and the fact that they had to resort to crime to earn a living. Therefore we are giving them another chance to rebuild their life."

This literacy drive isn't just about teaching them the alphabet, its also about teaching the prisoners here, the abc's of life.
