Five protesters detained at Jantar Mantar for trying to break barricades

New Delhi: Live updates: 2.54 pm: Five persons were detained at Jantar Mantar for trying to break barricades and clashing with police.

2.03 pm: Five Delhi Metro stations opened: Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Barakhamba Road, Mandi House and Pragati Maidan.

1.40 pm: Protesters turn violent at Jantar Mantar. Some of them try to break barricades and pelt stones at the police. The Rapid Action Force was called in to manage the crowd.

1.02 pm: The ten metro stations that are shut are: Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Race Course Road, Udyog Bhavan, Jor Bagh, Khan Market, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Pragati Maidan, Barakhamba Road.

12.18 pm: RPN Singh says the 'sole aim (of clampdown) is to make sure no one is injured. We cannot let a situation arise where there will be a security breach'.

10.23 am: Crowd thickens at Jantar Mantar. Protesters demand access to India Gate.

9.50 am: Delhi Police takes precautionary measures, shuts down all roads leading to India Gate to traffic. "Entire central vista including Rajpath, Vijay Chowk and all roads leading to India Gate will be closed for general traffic. Kamal Attaturk Marg has also been closed. All travellers are advised to avoid these roads," the Delhi Police says in an advisory.

The nationwide anti-rape protests continue on Sunday even as the body of the 23-year-old Delhi braveheart, victim of a brutal gangrape and physical assault, was laid to rest. The death of the paramedical student has stirred emotions across the country with people holding candlelight vigils, protests and silent marches to mourn her death and demand justice for her.

Many events are expected through the day across the nation. Protests are expected at Jantar Mantar, the University of Delhi and Ramlila Maidan in the national capital. Aam Aadmi Party, led by Arvind Kejriwal, will be holding protests in Bhopal.

Protests are also likely to be held in Patna, Hyderabad and Bangalore. Meanwhile, the ten metro stations that were shut on Saturday will continue to remain closed and Section 144 will remain in force in the New Delhi district of the capital. All roads leading to India Gate will be closed to traffic. Rajpath and Vijay Chowk too will remain out of bounds.
