Living in the shadow of militancy

Doda: The Doda district has seen a rise in the number of militants surrendering or getting killed in encounters.

One reason for this is the growing anti-jehadi sentiment among the local population.

Kahra could well be a village of only old men and children. The young men have either been killed by militants or forced to join the tanzeems.

Every family in the village has a story of loss - of missing brothers and sons, raped sisters and dead fathers.

"They first asked me for money, when I refused, they took away my son. We were able to get him to surrender after three years," a resident of the village Ghulam Haider said.

"They came in army uniforms and pulled my father out of my uncle's house. They killed him because he refused to give them money or let them marry my sister," another resident, Hussain, said.

Extortion, it seems has become a side business for militants. And this, coupled with a growing tendency of forcing women into "marriage", is turning public sentiment against them.

People like Ghulam Haider, who had also lost his brother because he refused to either pay or join the militants, are today actively helping the security forces. Perhaps to ensure that his nephew, Suhail, grows up in a different Kashmir.

Kanyakumari or Kahra, the kids could be playing cricket anywhere in India. But if Suhail is hitting sixers today, it is something his father could not have done.

Abdul Wahid was killed by militants when Suhail was only two years old. His crime - he refused to give in to the extortion threats from the militants.
