Mumbai: Every year Mumbai witnesses the collapse of a dozen old buildings, however, what is surprising is that a structure built just five years ago under the Slum Rehabilitation scheme has begun to lean dangerously and nobody seems to want to do anything about it.
The Slum Rehabilitation building leans dangerously to one side, although at the first glance, it may look like just another building. However, inside the structure, one is likely to feel a little imbalanced.
The problem started soon after the building was built in the year 2000. Residents of the building say that the builder carried out minor repairs, leaving one side totally useless.
“I had this shop, which was 250 square feet, However, I cannot use it since it has sunk, and the builder has put slabs underneath,” says a resident of the area.
People like Gajanan Malap, who lived in a hut on the same land, until this building was built and he moved in here, has been running from pillar to post to do something about the post. However, all he's got is the runaround.
“I have gone everywhere. I went to Municipal B wing, however, I have been sent to various places from there. Finally, they asked for a survey by IIT, but nothing has happened.
In a report, an independent consultant has stated the building is unsafe, however, nobody seems to care. Residents approximate that the building sinks half an inch every year.
The entrance of the building has been changed as the previous one became too low. In this confusion, the builder seems to have disappeared.
"We have been trying this for a year. Nothing is being done. One day this building will come crashing down on them, and there will be a long drawn inquiry," says RTI Activist, KM Semlani.
Meanwhile all that the people in this area can do is hope that someone comes to their rescue before something drastic happens.
