LNJP docs go on strike after clash

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Doctors at one of Delhi's biggest hospitals, the Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash (LNJP) hospital, are on strike, demanding more security following a clash between hospital staff and relatives of a patient who died in emergency on Friday.

The strike was announced late Friday night after the clash in which 40-odd attendants of the patient who died thrashed the doctor on duty.

Doctors at the LNJP Hospital had gone on strike earlier this year, in January, after a similar incident.

The strike has affected emergency services at the hospital. A Ghaziabad resident, Nasiruddin, came to LNJP hospital late Friday night only to find emergency services shut. “The doctors refused to treat me,” he says.

The doctors say they're not in favour of stalling hospital services but routine clashes with patients' relatives and absence of adequate security is unacceptable.

“There is no other way for us but to stop work,” says President of Resident Doctor’s Association, Dr Jitendra Singhla.

By the time the hospital authorities and the government find a solution to the security issue of the doctors, the strike may have taken its toll on thousands of patients for whom coming to this government hospital is their only choice.

But resident doctors say they have no assurance as of now and insist that until they feel secure they are not picking up the stethoscope again.
