Kochi (Kerala): New Year celebrations are increasingly becoming a nightmare for women. Close on the heels of the news of two women being molested by a group of 70 men in Mumbai comes the report that a Swedish tourist was molested in Kochi.
Local revelers molested a Swedish tourist's 15-year-old daughter at Fort Kochi on Monday night.
Though no complaint was lodged by the Swedish family, the local police has registered a suo moto report and arrested the alleged offender — a 17-year-old boy named Shafique.
The father of the girl said that he would now have to think twice before bring his children to India.
"While we are standing here and being interviewed by you, telling of all the wonderful experiences that we have had in India — which is true — a young man grabs my daughter from behind. This not proper behaviour of anybody, and I think people should really consider this seriously. If you want people to visit your country and see the beauty here, there has to be respect," said the father.
"I will have to think twice before bringing my children to India again," he added.
Kochi Commissoner of Police, Manoj Abhraham said, "Even if they file a complaint, by the time court summons come, the tourists will have left India. So we have taken suo moto police action and a case has been registered against the 17-year-old under Section 364 of the IPC."
He said that the police has registered the case on the evidence provided by the Sub-Inspector and the media footage.
Meanwhile, ACP C Jayachandran said except for the unpleasant incident, the new year festivities went off smoothly.
"More than 2,000 police personnel had been pressed in to ensure that everything was in order," he stated. Reports, however, said foreigners had a tough time as the local crowd swelled.
