New Delhi: In a shocking story, two sisters, who locked themselves up in their own home in Noida for the last seven months, were finally rescued from their home on Tuesday afternoon by the police.

Anuradha and Sonali Behl were carried out of their house seven months after the two sisters locked themselves up in their home. The siblings, both chartered accountants in their 40s had cut-off all connection with the outside world and remained shut inside their Noida home, which is less than 15 kilometres from Delhi. They were rescued by social workers on Tuesday, after neighbours raised an alarm.

"When I went inside, she started abusing me and while she was abusing me, lots of smell were coming out from her mouth and from her body and she was wearing three woolen clothes in this hot summer," said social activist Usha Thakur.

Neighbours said their father, Col Behl died 10 years ago and their married brother walked out of the house eight years ago after a property dispute between the siblings.

The brother who came down from Bangalore was shocked to see they had been reduced to this state. He said he had idea about their mental condition.

"Even if I wanted to help them they refused everything, my hands were tied. I am the youngest and they did not listen to me. I tried everything," he said.

The family had adopted a dog whom the sisters were very attached to. According to some neighbours, the dog died seven months ago, triggering their severe state of depression.

"The sisters were in a bad condition when they were brought in and it looks like they have been in depression since a long time and their state deteriorated in the past few weeks. The elder sister is critical while the other one is talking. She is not able to recall the chain of events but is talking faintly about her past. As of now doctors are focusing on medical treatment and later they will think about rehabilitation," said Kailash Hospital CCMO Sarika Chandra.

A maid, who was employed with them, said she was asked to leave by the sisters last year.

"They asked me to leave work as they were unable to pay me," said the maid servant.

Residents said Anuradha and Sonali would order for groceries from the local shop. Every few days they would order in packed food products like biscuits, chips and juice, but never rice or pulses. Pizza delivery boys were also often seen at their house. But in the past month, even this was stopped. They are currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. One of the sisters is in critical condition.
