Lockout at RCL, unions call bandh

Express News Service | Posted on Feb 02, 2012 at 11:48am IST

YANAM: Four days after labour unrest and extensive arson at its factory in Yanam, Regency Ceramics Ltd (RCL) has declared a lockout of the unit, stating it was not possible to run operations under prevailing circumstances. A four-page notice listing 14 reasons for the lockout was pasted on the factory’s main gate on Wednesday.
The lockout puts a question mark on the livelihoods of 6,000 people dependent on the company. The management said it is also not in a position to reopen its educational institutions in which 3,000 students study. It said workers were continuing their agitation despite reaching an agreement with the management in May 2011.
Meanwhile, the Puducherry police arrested three persons relating to last week’s violence in Yanam and produced them in court on Wednesday.  Opposition trade unions will hold a dawn-to-dusk bandh on Thursday seeking a judicial probe.
