Bhubaneswar: Who killed Biranchi Das, coach of marathon runner, the child prodigy Budhiya?
The man who was being suspected, underworld gangster Raja Acharya, is himself now accusing the top police.
“There are some good, bad and ugly people in every department and I admit we have some of them. I assure we will soon take strong action against them,” says Police Commissioner, Bhubaneswar, Binoy Behera.
The Orissa government has finally acted on reports of an alleged nexus between some policemen, and gangster Raja Acharya, prime accused in the Biranchi Das murder case.
On Friday, an embarrassed Chief Minister ordered a Lok Pal probe and transferred seven IPS officers, all DCPs of the Bhubaneswar police commissionerate.
"The Lok Pal will investigate into the alleged nexus between criminals and police and also into all other aspect of the murder,” says Chief Minister, Orissa, Naveen Patnaik.
For the record though the government maintains that the officers transferred had nothing to do with Raja Acharya.
“The transfers are routine and this will not affect the investigation into the Biranchi murder case,” says home secretary, Tarun Kanti Mishra.
But Raja Acharya, who's in hiding, told CNN-IBN that a senior IAS officer and Biranchi had threatened to kill him for harassing actor Leslie Tripathy.
Though the officer denies the charge, Acharya's allegation only raised questions over the role of some officials in the case.
Immediately after Biranchi Das was murdered a special task force was formed to arrest the main accused Raja Acharya.
But since reportedly vital information was passed on to the gangster from the police department the criminal could not be nabbed.
After the Chief Minister's action on Friday the police now hope to arrest Raja Acharya soon.
