New Delhi: Lok Sabha MP Atiq Ahmed has been arrested. The Delhi Police's special cell arrested the Phulpur MP late on Thursday evening. He was arrested from an apartment in Peetampura in West Delhi.
He is an accused in many cases of murder and kidnapping and is wanted in the murder of an Uttar Pradesh MLA, BSP's Raju Pal, in Allahabad.
He was carrying a reward of Rs 20,000 on his head. The Uttar Pradesh police had secured a non-bailable warrant against him in connection with the murder case.
Atiq Ahmed was earlier a member of the Samajwadi Party. He has been absconding for the past six months.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had recently accused her political rivals of sheltering Atiq Ahmed. She even claimed threat to her life from the MP.
Ahmed, on the other hand, had alleged that there was threat to his life from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and it was for that reason he was not surrendering to the state police.
MP Atiq Ahmed will be handed over to Uttar Pradesh police on transit remand with a direction to produce him before an Allahabad court within two days.
Delhi Police Special Cell Joint Commissioner, Karnail Singh said the police acted on a tip off to arrest Atiq Ahmed. "We got a tip off that he is somewhere around north west district and and we send a police team and nabbed him."
