New Delhi: The BJP MPs led by LK Advani on Tuesday protested in Parliament the appointment of Lokayukta in Gujarat and demanded immediate recall of Gujarat Governor Kamla Beniwal for nominating former Gujarat High Court judge RA Mehta without Narendra Modi's consent.

Inside the House it was Arun Jaitley who led the charge accusing the Centre of interfering in state matters said that the Governor has done it at the behest of the Centre.

The Governor last week had appointed justice Mehta as the Lokayukta after his name was recommended by the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. The leader of the Opposition in the selection panel had also given his consent while the state government is opposed to it and has also moved the state high court challenging this move.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that the Gujarat Governor has not done anything wrong in appointing RA Mehta as the Lokayukta of the state.

The BJP is drawing support from the smaller regional parties for the issue by making it a State vs Centre issue. It is even contemplating a substantive motion against the governor in the Rajya Sabha where the government does not have a clear majority.

Having lost a chief minister in Karnataka on the Lokayukta report, the BJP is now not taking any chances. It is rallying behind the Gujarat CM and its MP's will meet President Pratibha Patil later this week demanding her immediate intervention.
