London calling for Le Tour de France

New Delhi: The Tour de France kicks off in London this weekend and the city is getting quite excited at the prospect. There is carnival-like atmosphere at Trafalgar Square as cyclists prepare for what is often called the most difficult sporting event in the world.

The English may not like the French much; but when the Tour de France comes around it does get them excited. Riders and teams will be presented to the public on Friday and the first of the events takes place on Saturday. London may be in the grip of a terror alert at the moment, but the event will go ahead as per schedule.

"Security is always on our minds and on particularly the Metropolitan Police's minds for major events. Now the Metropolitan Police look after everything to do with the security side of things and we always take the lead from the Met. And how security is dealt with in the event, well, it's all in the planning, everything will carry on as normal," says Gary McGowan of the Transport for London Special Projects.

The big guns will be seen in action later but the amateurs are already getting a go, and loving every minute of it.

Oh, it's excellent. It's super-fast in certain areas and a couple of bumps here and there, but apart from that it's pretty good," explains cyclist Robert Young.

England's love affair with the tour ends on Sunday, and the battle for the Tour de France begins in earnest on Monday in France.
