London: Dense and freezing fog is common in London but this year it has turned Christmas into chaos for thousands of stranded passengers with hundreds of flights being cancelled and many more delayed.
Half of all flights from Heathrow Airport, especially to British and European destinations have been cancelled or delayed.
Long-haul flights are also experiencing long waits and with the fog getting thicker, patience on the ground is getting thinner.
“We have got a family in Holland and they really want to see their grandson so we are concerned. It is not great fun being in the airport,” says a passenger.
"It seems like we are not going to spend Christmas with family,” says another passenger.
"You know there is nothing you can do. It's bad weather. It is tough luck,” reasons another passenger.
The fog stubbornly refuses to lift and Christmas is just around the corner.
"We are doing all we can but we do not expect the situation to improve that much,” says BAA, Heathrow Airport, Mark Bullock.
There's little comfort in the weather forecast. However, British Airways has already cancelled all domestic flights for Friday.
"The high pressure we have got at the moment is going to stay with us and as far as that stays we are not going to see any improvement,” says Philippa Drew of London Weather Office.
In a foggy weather planes land on autopilot, and only half as many are allowed to land or take-off as normal for safety reasons.
The forecast doesn’t promise good cheer and London is likely to be socked in on Friday again for a third straight day and that just happens to be the busiest flying day of the year.
