London: Indian student stabbed; 11 arrested

London: An Indian student, Pravin Reddy, doing an MBA at the London Business School was stabbed on Friday in the London borough of Newham Scotland Yard on Saturday said.

Eleven people have been arrested following the stabbing of the Indian student who was not named by the Scotland Yard.

Pravin was admitted to the London Royal hospital with deep neck, abdomen & chest injuries.

The family has been informed Pravin underwent surgery and remains stable, if still critical. Reports indicate he was attending a party a party when the incident occured. Scotland Yard which is investigating the case has arrested 11 people.

As per standard practice, Scotland Yard did not name the victim, but said he is in hospital in a critical condition.

Reports in the Indian media have identified the victim as Praveen Reddy, who was enrolled for an MBA at the London Business School.

The uncle of the Hyderabad boy said, "We are hearing that surgical process has already started. He is recovering fast and is conscious. This is a complicated surgery. Police have said blood relatives should be there soon in case requirement of blood."

UK High Commission issued a statement on Saturday saying, "We are establishing the facts and working closely with MEA. We will do everyhing so that the family can go and see their son. We are taking up the matter seriously. We want to tell you that UK is a safe country."

"Police called at 08.23 on Friday, 10 February to Newham General Hospital after a man in his 20's was admitted suffering from stab wounds. He is currently in hospital in a critical condition," Scotland Yard said in a statement. Officers believe the man sustained his injuries at an address in Kent Street, E13. Eleven people have been arrested. Four remain in custody. The other seven have been bailed until future dates. Detectives from Newham Borough are investigating," it added.

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on Saturday spoke to acting Indian High Commissioner in UK and directed to extend all help to the Indian student stabbed.

Krishna also spoke to the stabbed student, Praveen Reddy's father and assured him all support in getting visa.

There is no suggestion yet that the stabbing incident was motivated by race hatred.

Pravin was expected to arrive in Hyderabad to attend a family wedding in next week. But days before the celebrations were to begin, Pravin's family now prays for his life.
