London Olympics panel backs Dow as sponsor

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Chairman of London's 2012 Olympic Organising Committee Sebastian Coe has spoken out in favour of sponsor Dow Chemicals, despite criticism over the company's involvement in the Bhopal gas tragedy.

Coe said he empathised with the victims of the disaster but said the two were entirely different issues.

"Dow only became the major shareholders in that company in 2001, some 17 years after the tragedy. So, of course I understand the human scale of that suffering, but these are two very different issues," Coe said.

Reacting to the OC Chairman's comments, activist Satinath Sarangi said that India should boycott International Olympics Association. "This is a disservice to the spirit of Olympics. Indian Olympics Association should boycott the International Olympics Association," he said.

Victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy as well as former Indian Olympians and officials have been putting pressure on the Olympics organisers to drop Dow as a sponsor.
