Corruption in Supreme Court office exposed

New Delhi: Two officials in the Supreme Court registrar's office and a lawyer, who were arrested for allegedly demanding money for early listing of a case, were produced in a Delhi court on Tuesday.

The trio was arrested after a complainant, Dr Kunal Saha, blew the whistle on them, exposing possible corruption in the country's apex court.

Dr Saha, fighting a legal battle for the past 11 years, has managed to single-handedly expose corruption in the registrar's office of the highest court in the country.

The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested the three accused on Monday after Saha alleged the officials demanded money from him for an early listing of his case.

Dr Saha had appealed against doctors who allegedly caused the death of his wife during a surgery, four years ago in the Supreme Court.

“I said I want to see it listed (only) then I will pay. Next day they came with a list and it was listed. In fact it was listed today (February 10) in the weekly list so it did not come in the court,” says Dr Saha.

The three accused, KS Badrinath and C Parimal both assistants to the registrar, and KM Singh, an attorney who acted as the go-between, were produced in the Tis Hazari Court on Tuesday afternoon and their police remand was extended by a day.

Experts say the incident only confirms long standing suspisions of corruptions in the listing branch of the Supreme Court that decides before which judge and on what date the matters will be listed.

“The listing process of the Supreme Court at some point of time seems to have been fiddled with in order to allow this kind of manipulation of registry officials trying to get particular cases listed before particular judges,” Prashant Bhushan, Supreme Court lawyer, says.

It is ironic that even after Saha's complaint against corruption he will not be able to fight the delay and his day in the court might still be months away.
