Continuing its tough stance on bureaucrats perceived as partial in Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission has removed the state Chief Secretary N C Vajpai. His removal comes two days after the commission replaced DGP Bua Singh and several other civil administration officials. Shambhu Nath, a senior IAS officer of 1970 batch has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary.
MDMK breaks ties with UPA
Viako's MDMK has finally broken ties with the UPA. The party has withdrawn support from the alliance government at the centre. MDMK had contested the last general elections in alliance with the DMK in Tamil Nadu but had switched over to the AIADMK led alliance just before the assembly polls last year.
CBI accused of suppressing information on Quttarochi case
The Supreme Court has adjourned for four weeks the hearing of contempt petition against CBI top brass Ottavio Quattarochi’s extradition case. The petition was filed accusing the CBI of deliberately suppressing the information of Quttarochi's detention in Argentina recently. The government has however informed the court that Quattrochi's extradition application is coming up for hearing in Argentina later this month.
