Mumbai: Singer Sonu Nigam is taking a leaf out of Munna Bhai's book, and is thanking radio channels for not playing songs from his new album Classically Mild and that according to the singer has helped sales of the album.

"There is an overkill by radio channels. However, by not playing songs from Clasically Mild, radio channels have helped us this time because this has become the second best album in the album charts," says Chief Marketing Officer, Sa Re Ga Ma, HMV, Gavin Dabreo.

Video killed the radio star was a famous Buggles song which might have been the anthem when the television boom happened, however, now music companies are saying that it is the FM stations that are affecting music sales due to their complete overkill of any new product.

With online piracy and digital downloads being the preferred way of owning music, sales of albums have been dipping steadily globally. Even the recent box-office hit Race which has reportedly grossed close to Rs 80 crore worldwide is still struggling with music sales of just over a lakh units.

"Since the beginning radio has killed the hit products of the industry,” says Chairman, MD, Tips, Kumar Taurani.

However, the FM channels on their part believe that they are doing their job as usual, of promoting music and playing the popular chart busters.

"When a Bollywood song breaks, unfamiliar songs become familiar and then the song goes on to become popular. Radio plays the initial part of making a familiar song popular," says Programming Head, Big FM, Manav Dhanda.
