Bangalore: The Indian middle class has disappointed again especially the in urban centres of Bangalore and Pune. The encouragement to the young and the middle class to come out and vote has gone in vain.
Two major metros - Bangalore and Pune - were in this phase of the elections. In Bangalore Air Deccan founder Captain Gopinath appealed to the youth and the middle class to participate in the democratic.
"I appeal to all the youth and middle class voters to go out and cast their votes. Bangalore must show the way, I have given the bugle call, the clarion call for this," said Captain Gopinath.
Gopinath, an independent candidate on his second attempt to land himself a Lok Sabha seat is depending on the middle class south Bangalorean to vote for him. In Bangalore the turnout was low, but neither his coaxing, nor the attempts by the election commission have helped.
Just minutes before polling ended in Bangalore, the city saw a late rush of people coming out and casting their vote. For most part of the day the city saw a sluggish 20-25 per cent voter turnout, but as the day progressed more people came out and caste their vote.
It was the same case in Pune too - another high profile urban constituency. The high profile Suresh Kalmadi was basing his confidence to win on the youth vote from Pune.
"I have provided employment to the youth of Pune. Pune knows my work, I don't think that the other candidates in Pune are formidable," said Kalmadi.
However, the numbers don't stack up for Kalmadi, from the young and the middle class voters, Pune's turnout too was as usual low.
The main aim this time around was to make every single vote count, but all the campaigning failed to sway the Pune voter instead of choosing the next government the Pune voter decided to treat polling day as a bonus holiday.
