Lt Col and Samjhauta blasts link probed: ATS

Nashik: Lt Col Prasad Purohit now appears to be the focus of investigations in multiple blasts. The ATS is now investigating the role played by the key accused in the Malegaon blast case, Lt col Purohit, in the Samjhauta Express blasts of 2007.

Fresh details that the ATS gave the Nashik court after the interrogation of Lt Col Prasad Purohit reveal that the Lt Col Prasad is the mastermind and has played a key role in the Malegaon blasts.

He was posted in Deolali camp in Nashik in 2006 when he was entrusted with 60 kgs of RDX that was meant to be deposited in totality to the army depot.

But Lt Col Purohit siphoned off some of the RDX.

ATS alleges that Purohit gave a part of this RDX to a certain 'Bhagwan'. The ATS is now exploring if Bhagwan used RDX in the Samjhauta express blast or not.

Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Ajay Misar said, "Part of the 60 kg RDX that was in possession of Prasad was given to Bhagwan by him and the ATS is probing the possibilities where all of it was likely to be used and it has nothing to do with the Samjhauta blasts."

The Samjhauta Express blasts in February 2007 killed 68 people of which 47 were Pakistani citizens. 50 others were injured. The train, a symbol of thawing Indo-Pak relations was at Deewana near Panipat when the blasts ocurred.

While the Chandigarh Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report of the Samjhauta Express claims that ammonium nitrate was used in large quantities, a year later the ATS has told the court that its is exploring the possibilty of RDX being used in the Samjhauta bombing.

This claim has definitely given a new twist to the unsolved case of Samjhauta express blasts and has also raised a question if all the revelations made by ATS so far are just claims or does it have enough evidence to prove them in the court of law.

Meanwhile, the defence seems to be all set to take advantage of all the verbal revelations made by the ATS.

Defence lawyer Advocate Avinash Bhide said, "Whatever claims they have made are not on record and they are just verbal claims."

Meanwhile the court has extended Purohit's custody until November 18.
