Click to play videoNew Delhi: Residents of Sri Lanka's capital Colombo got an unpleasant taste of the war raging on in the North of the country.
A Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) light aircraft penetrated the city's air defences late Tuesday night and dropped two bombs on the power plant setting a section ablaze and killing one person.
Earlier the LTTE had bombed an army base 300 kilometers to the north in Mannar injuring three soldiers.
Both attacks come in the wake of the Sri Lankan army making major advances into the LTTE stronghold in Killinochchi.
Military spokesperson, Sri Lanka Brigadier Udaya Nayyanakara says, “We have already destroyed one of their aircraft in one of the attack. So with this resource available, they may have tried this attack. However, they could not achieve the expected necessary result.”
Although Colombo's air defence radar had detected the aircraft, air defence guns failed to bring it down nor did the air force have any success in locating where the aircraft flew after the bombing.
The military believes the attacks were psychological in nature, a warning that the LTTE still has the ability to deliver a punch even if it is on the defensive in the north.
The LTTE is believed to operate three to five Czech built light aircraft.
Satellite images have shown that they have more than one airstrip inside areas under their control.
However, the location and how they operate remains a mystery.
