LTTE gone but Sri Lanka pauses at crossroads

The Sri Lankan military’s against victory against the LTTE in May 2009 altered the dynamics of the long-standing ethnic Tamil versus Sinhala conflict. Eight months later the sound of guns was replaced by the sound of fireworks on the streets of Colombo. President Mahinda Rajpaksa returned to power in elections but Tamils in the North did vote against him. Will Rajpaksa’s electoral win the bigger battle facing Sri Lanka, the battle for a political and social solution to the ethnic Tamil versus Sinhala conflict?
