LTTE raids Jaffna military base

New Delhi: In the second air strike in a month, Tamil Tigers attacked a large military base at Jaffna peninsula in Sri Lanka, early on Tuesday morning.

They used two light aircraft to attack the Lankan forces said an LTTE spokesman confirming the attack.

Six soldiers were killed and 10 others were wounded in the air raid. According to news agency PTI, Sri Lanka's army chief Lt Gen Sarath Fonseka said the Tigers used light aircraft to attack Palaly military facility, but ground troops opened fire forcing them to change course.

Fonseka, appearing on national television, gave details of how the military beat back the rebel attack.

"Troops on the forward defence lines saw them coming and alerted Palaly. They switched off all lights, took out the heavy guns and opened up," he said adding the Tigers while retreating dropped two bombs on the nearby Milady army camp.

Tiger spokesman Rasiah Ilanthiryan was quoted by PTI as saying that two light aircraft of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam bombed the Palaly air base in Jaffna and returned to their secret location in the Wanni region, further south.

"We have carried our second air attack at 0120 local time on the Palaly air field and their military stores," Ilanthiriyan was quoted by PTI as saying from an undisclosed location in the northern part of the Island.

This is the second time rebels conducted an air raid, after a strike near Colombo, last month.
