New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has warned that Congress president Sonia Gandhi could be the target of an attack by Sri Lankan Tamil rebels.
Sources in the Home Ministry told CNN-IBN that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) could attack Gandhi during an election rally. The Ministry has written to the police chiefs of all states and asked them to tighten security at Gandhi’s rallies.
Chidambaram has written to 40 senior politicians and asked them to be careful about their security during campaigning. In an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN on Wednesday, he said the road shows of some leaders may even have to be cancelled.
“We have specific intelligence that infiltrators will try and disrupt elections; they will try to cause violence when the election process is on in the country. Their (leaders) plans are drawn up after taking into account the state, town and the time. That means they will mostly address rallies and meetings but I can't rule out road shows--mostly they will address rallies and meetings,” said Chidambaram.
The Home Ministry has already sent an advisory to police chiefs to increase the security of 11 Chief Ministers.
