M F Husain's Durga draws controversy

London: Not new to raised eyebrows to his art, Maqbool Fida Husain is yet again courting controversy with his paintings of Hindu gods and goddesses.

This time a naked image of Durga had the Hindu Forum of Britain pullout the exhibition from Asia House in London.

In a recently held solo exhibition of the artist at the Asia Houses in London, his paintings have created a ripple among the Hindu community. This isn't the first time the painter has painted Hindu gods and goddesses in sexual poses, but the one showing a naked Durga had many Indians protesting.

But some Indians also opposed strongly to this protest.

Hindu Rights Activist Anish Kumar says, “We saw in the press release that there is an image of goddess Durga naked with a tiger. We found it utterly offensive.”

“If Husain was a not a Muslim painter, this obscene painting thing would have not happened. They are not objecting to paintings, they are objecting to him being a Muslim, who is doing Hindu paintings. I object that only Hindus have rights to paint Hindu gods and goddesses. I am embarrassed that Hindus are behaving in aggressive and fundamentalist way,” says MP, House of Lords Lord Meghnath Desai.

Restoration of Hindu rights or denial of artist’s rights to expression, Everybody has view on that.
