London: Pop diva Madonna screamed in disbelief on Saturday when told a judge had refused her permission to adopt three-year-old Malawian orphan Chifundo 'Mercy' James.
Her lawyer broke the news, the shocked singer buried her head in her hands and yelled, "What?", according to Mirror online.
"She kept wringing her hands and covering her face in her hands. She was really in shock," said a source.
The star has, however, vowed to appeal against the decision and a hearing is expected to take place next week.
High court Judge Esimie Chombo ruled against Madonna because she did not satisfy a law that says prospective parents must be resident in Malawi for 18 to 24 months before adopting.
