Madras HC upholds EC decision to hide AIADMK symbol on buses

Chennai: The Madras High court has upheld the Election Commission's decision to conceal the two leaves symbol on mini buses plying across the state capital.

The decision came after a petition was filed by DMK treasurer MK Stalin demanding that the two leaves symbol on mini buses and pictures of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on bottles of the low cost beverage - Amma Mineral Water - sold by the Tamil Nadu government be removed as it violates the model code of conduct.

Last week, the Election Commission told the court it had decided to conceal the pictures.

The AIADMK had argued that the two leaves symbol painted on the buses was in no way connected to the party or its symbol. The mini buses or the feeder services were inaugurated by Jayalalithaa in 2013.

During the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2012, the EC had directed the Mayawati government to conceal all the elephant statues across the state. The elephant is the symbol of her party, the Bahujan Samaj Party.
