New Delhi: The Meteorological Department says a 6.7-magnitude earthquake has stuck the Andaman Islands off the east coast of India. The office said the undersea quake struck at 17:40 hrs IST on Friday.

An administration officials in Andaman said, "We have not issued any Tsunami warning so far and there is no need for widespread evacuation because it's 6.7 magnitude quake. We are studying the situation."

The US Geological Survey reported that the quake was centered 71 miles southwest of Port Blair, in the Andaman Islands, and was 21.7 miles deep.

The islands were among the many areas devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

No loss of life or damage to property have been reported. Tremors have also been felt in Port Blair, Nicobar and Yangon in Myanmar. Minor tremors were felt in some parts of Tamil Nadu. The epicentre was Andaman islands.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a bulletin saying there was ''a very small possibility of a destructive local tsunami in the Indian Ocean.''

However, the Director of General Police, Andaman Islands, Ranjit Narayan was quoted by PTI as saying that no local tsunami warning had been issued and that there was no need to panic.
