No one should defame Maharashtra: Governor

CNN-IBN

Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray may have got an unlikely supporter in his Marathi Manoos versus North Indian row.

Maharashtra Governor SC Jamir has come out strongly in support of the state and its people.

In a strongly worded statement Jamir said outsiders need not interfere in internal matters of the state.

He said the state government had the duty to uphold Marathi pride and address the issues of its people.

The statement came after an all-party delegation led by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh met him to discuss the matter.

"Maharashtra is a cradle of Indian nationalism and is one of the most progressive states in the country. Nobody has any right to defame Maharashtra," Jamir said in a statement.

Earlier an all-party meeting, the second one in as many days, convened by Deshmukh on Wednesday to discuss the Anti-North Indian agitation by the MNS, saw the BJP boycotting it and Shiv Sena not participating in the delegation that later met Governor Jamir.

The meeting, held at Mantralaya, expressed concern over the "maligning of Maharashtra's image in the country despite the state having an all-encompassing culture".

The state government has also has banned the screening of the movie Deshdrohi.

The movie has several references to the current MNS violence against North Indians in Maharashtra.

Raj Thackeray's party has been opposing the release of the movie in the state. A team from the party, which was at its preview, had objected to several scenes on anti-North Indian violence.

The film is set for release across the country on Friday.

The producer of the movie Kamal Rashid Khan reacted by saying he is still waiting for any written statement regarding banning the movie.

"I haven't received anything in written regarding my film banned in Maharashtra. As and when I get anything in written I will approach the court," Kamal Rashid Khan said in New Delhi
