Mumbai: Navaratri is a pan Indian festival season though it has its origins in Gujarat. The music these days is from across the globe though.
The dandiya raas is very famous in Gujarat and neighbouring Maharashtra. The festive spirit of Navratri is already in the air. If you're getting set for some dandiya action, you would like to know what the youngsters are dancing to this season.
Predictably, apart from the regular traditional numbers, most dandiya nights will come with a Bollywood flavour.
"Today, the public wants more and more of Bollywood, so usually we start off with some traditional music and then eventually move on to Bollywood,” said Manish, a musician at the Juhu Navaratra Mandal.
“Whatever is being played these days is called disco dandiya and the festival does not have its old Gujarati ethnic flavour. So we try to stay within limits of the tenets of the festival and churn out numbers in Gujarati, marathi and Rajasthani, while still adhering to traditions,” said singer Phalguni Phatak.
Dandiya Nights this year also have a special attraction with some groups having already collaborated with forthcoming releases like Drona and Hello.
The cast of these films is expected to spend time with their fans and play the Dandiya too.
So people in Mumbai’s streets can look forward to matching their steps with their favourite Bollywood stars, too.
