Mumbai: Scanty rainfall in Maharashtra have meant that the demand for power has stayed up while supply has remained low. But it's the state's industries that will now have to bear the brunt of the power shortage.
In what has come as a huge jolt to industries in Maharashtra, the state energy distribution company Mahavitaran has announced that it will shut off power supply to industries for 40 hours every week.
The state currently faces a shortfall of 5000 megawatts. Apart from a 40-hour weekly power cut, industries would also have to switch to a five-day week.
Additional all high tension industrial consumers i.e., those who do not have weekly offs have been ordered to reduce their daily consumption by 10 per cent or be forced to take a one day weekly off.
All shopping malls in cities have been ordered to cut down their consumption by 20 per cent.
Power supply would also be discontinued to hoardings and floodlights.
To make sure that industries and shopping malls follow the order, Mahavitaran will monitor daily consumption.
