Mumbai: Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Abdul Sattar has been caught on camera beating up and kicking an election ticket aspirant.
Sattar got into an argument with over the seat sharing formula between the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party for the Aurangabad municipal election.
Maharashtra Chief minister Ashok Chavan had reacted to the assault by Sattar saying it wasn't an important matter but after protests he was forced to change his tune.
Chavan has now said that he will ask Sattar for an explanation.
"What happened was not right. During polls leaders of NCP and Congress had issues over ticket allotments," said Chavan
The incident happened during a meeting called for seat sharing talks for the forthcoming Aurangabad municipal polls.
At the meeting Sattar was involved in a brawl with party workers. In full view of senior Congress leaders and office bearers Sattar hurled abuses and attacked a party activist, bringing major embarrassment to Congress leadership in the state.
Even after Sattar was caught on camera kicking and assaulting the worker, he remained defiant
"I have not done anything wrong. I don't know who this person is. I am going to file a police complaint against this person," said Sattar.
The meeting held to forge an alliance between Congress, the NCP and the Pragati Aghadi, a local breakaway faction of the Shiv Sena, witnessed all the chaos after Sattar got into a scuffle with an aspirant who had come to ask for a party ticket..
Opposition parties wanted to raise the issue in the state Assembly on Monday but were prevented by the Speaker.
There have been several instances of ministers in Maharashtra abusing or attacking civil servants or citizens but what makes this one special was that it was captured on video and it happened in full view of senior politicians and media.
The question now is with such clear evidence in this case will legal action be taken against Sattar.
