Maharashtra deluged, Mumbai gets a breather

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Heavy rains have inundated several parts of Maharashtra particularly low-lying areas and normal life was disrupted with road, suburban rail and air service thrown out of gear due to flooding.

Ratnagiri, Chiplun and Khed towns in the Konkan region are the worst-hit areas.

Authorities have deployed the Disaster Response Force in Chiplun and Khed to rescue marooned people while Army is on standby in some other parts of Konkan.

All rivers in the region are in spate. As many as 200 people were evacuated in Mahad in Ratnagiri, 200 in Raigad district and 130 in Sangli city in Western Maharashtra.

Heavy downpour for the fourth consecutive day has snapped contact of the district headquarters with 54 villages. Officials say Kolhapur district's Shirol, Khidrapur, Rajapuri villages are totally cut-off from the rest of the state.

"The situation in the state is under control as of now, but as there is no indication of the rains stopping, we have to be careful. We have asked the Army to be on standby in some parts of Konkan," Secretary, Relief and Rehabilitation, Ramesh Kumar told PTI.

"We are in constant touch with the district/divisional authorities and are monitoring the situation every hour. As of now there is no need to panic. We are also in touch with the National Disaster Management Cell,” Kumar added.

While no loss of life has been reported so far, Kumar said, “there is bound to be significant damage to property.”

Landslides have also been reported in some parts of Konkan.

Meanwhile, the Met Department has said that Mumbai will witness heavy rains on Sunday. The civic authority has advised people to remain indoors.

On Saturday, incessant showers disrupted life across the city. Mumbai recorded 174 millimeters of rain in 19 hours, which is 40 per cent of what it is to get for the entire season.

Flood waters recede in Mumbai

Life in rain-battered Mumbai got back on track on Sunday as floodwaters receded from waterlogged areas and traffic was normal in most parts, however, an immediate respite from rains appeared unlikely as the Met Department forecast heavy downpours in the city.

However, Mumbaikars say that they are again disappointed by the lackluster approach of the civic authorities in avoiding such a deluge.

“Very unfortunate that by just getting three-four inches of rain the city is flooded, “ a resident, Dr Bhavsar complained.

While another resident said, “The Government hasn't delivered on any promises. They have spent lakhs of rupees but to no avail.”

Rail, road and air services, which were badly disrupted on Sunday, have been restored. Suburban trains are running but are behind schedule, officials said.

Sunday being a holiday, few people and little traffic was seen on the roads. However, if the rains continue, office-goers may have a tough time reaching their destinations on Monday.

Met officials forecast intermittent and heavy rains in various parts of the city. "There has been a heavy downpour, but less than Saturday," an MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai) official told PTI.
