Maharashtra shocker: Police term rape, killing of three sisters as an accident

Nagpur: Months after the horrific Delhi gangrape case, there was another shocker, this time from Maharashtra where three minor sisters were raped and murdered in Bhandara district. Mother of the victims has accused the police of a shoddy probe while enraged locals blocked the National Highway number 6 for several hours.

The bodies of the sisters were dumped in a well after they went missing from their school on February 14. Hitting out at the police over the incident, the mother of the murdered girls said, "Police did not take the case seriously...I don't want the compensation, use that in the investigation instead."

Preliminary post mortem report has confirmed that the girls were raped before being murdered. Enraged villagers, demanding a swift probe, on Wednesday blocked the National Highway number 6 for over four hours, while a bandh was called in the district. Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and senior police officials rushed in to oversee the investigation.

The locals are angry that the police initially termed the case as an accident. A police inspector has been suspended. The police are grilling three suspects even as they are awaiting a detailed chemical analysis report to ascertain the exact cause of death. However, angry locals are adamant to carry on with the protests till the culprits are arrested.
