New Delhi: With Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee being named as the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government's candidate for President poll, there will a major reshuffle of the Cabinet. Sources say Mukherjee could step down as the Finance Minister on June 24 after his nomination.
India could soon have new Finance, Home and Defence ministers if Mukherjee become the President of India. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to keep the finance portfolio for the time.
Mukherjee is also the Leader of the Lok Sabha and this position could be taken up by either Home Minister P Chidambaram or Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde. There is a growing view in the government and the Congress to have a Muslim as the Home Minister. Law & Justice and Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid along with Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad are the probable candidates.
President poll and the likely reshuffle was discussed during a meeting on Friday at the residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and attended by Mukherjee, Chidamabaram, Khurshid, and Human Resource Development and Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal.
The portfolios of Sibal and Commerce & Industry and Textiles Minister Anand Sharma could also be changed.
