New Delhi: Independent India is turning 60 this year and the occasion calls for a song.

Not just any song, but something that captures the spirit of the entire nation. In one word, an anthem.

The Rising India anthem, is composed by the hit trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, written by Prasoon Joshi and sung by Asha Bhonsle.

So what happens when you put a classical musician, a blues guitarist and a jazz lover in one room?

You get the music of the new generation, full of funk, and yet unmistakably Indian. That's why they were perfect as composers of the anthem.

“It’s the spirit of India as of today of which the youth is the focus. The youth of today is what the future is going to be so that's what we have focused on,” said Shankar Mahadevan.

“It's vibrant, young, there's a force in the song. At the same time it's so easy that you take it home with you,” said Loy.

Add to this, the lyrics of Prasoon Joshi, and each line of song, is charged with an inspiring verse.

“The studio is next to my house, so I almost went back to my house. Shankar was there and we started working on the phrase Dum Dama Dum. Then he started humming it and I was like, that's happening!” said Prasoon Joshi.

The anthem also needed a voice that could best represent India and her journey.

Asha bhonsle, whose youthful voice has held sway over Indian hearts for 60 years, fit the bill perfectly.

“When Rajdeep asked me to sing this song, I didn't know what kind of a song it would be. He told me he had gotten it written and that I'll be working with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy,” said Asha Bhonse.

What does it take to make an anthem? It takes individuals who believe that India is not just a country but a nation. A nation that is complete in itself, and a beacon to the world. A nation that is Rising, here and now!
