London: The ninth Tongues of Fire Film Festival organised the 'Golden Girl' dance competition to honour the original Golden Girl Helen.
“It really touches me within and I didn't know until I got here that this whole program is based on all my songs, this whole program and evening is honouring me. I mean I get choked when I think of it, I thank my lord for this wonderful evening,” says Helen.
The diva sizzled her way through hit numbers like, Mera Maam Chin Chin Chu and Piya Tu Ab To Aaja was well loved for making each performance enjoyably her own.
“I used to get a high when I used to dance, I didn't need all the LSD's and the drugs to give me that feeling. It was like a meditation for me,” Helen recalls.
Meanwhile, even today Bollywood still echoes of the catchy numbers that Helen made so popular, with Kareena Kapoor redoing Yeh Mera Dil in Farhan Akhtar’s remake Don and Urmila Matondkar all set to perform Mehbooba in the remake of Sholay.
So what does the leading lady herself think of all this?
“Kareena - I love that child. She’s a wonderful girl and I wish her all the best. She’s so vibrant and so vivacious. She did very well, especially on stage for the screen program, I really loved it maybe because I was there and gave her that extra energy,” she says.
When asked who she think shakes the best, Helen said, ”My daughter Malaika Khan. She has the exuberant personality once the camera is on and she really oozes oomph and enjoys her work and dancing.”
And with a CD of her hit songs released as a special tribute and a trip down memory lane Helen is clearly moved and it appears Bollywood and its fans are not likely to easily forget a lady who sizzled on screen and gave dancing a new high.
