New Delhi: Well Malayalam superstars Mohanlal and Mammotty may still be able to carry a film on their shoulders single handedly. But there is a sweep of small budget experimental films that Keralites are welcoming with open arms. The success of no superstar movie Salt and pepper is a fine example. Young Asif Ali and former director turned actor Lal managed to do the undoable.

Films that deal with multiple narratives that go back and forth interjecting into each other as the storyline unfolds with each episodic scenario has also been lapped by Malayalees, like Traffic and City of Gods.

Comedian Salim Kumar delivered Adaminte Makan Abu, a simple soulful story which even won 4 national awards including one for himself.

Mammootty and Mohanlal too are returning to the films that made them stars years ago. Mammootty in fact has been on an experimental route for some time doing a different flavour movie for each season. The art movie Kuttyshrank to the sleeper hit Pranchiyettan he is reinventing himself. Mohanlal has meanwhile returned with Snehaveedu made by veteran director Sathyan Anthikadu. The man who gave few of the best man next door, endearing roles to Mohanlal.

But for Diwali there are no big Malayalam releases. Keralites have to be satisfied with the neighbouring much hyped Tamil movies – 7am Arivu and Velayudham – and ofcourse Ra one. November looks promising though when Mammotty’s Venicile Vyapari and Mohanlal’s Arabiyum, Ottakavum and Madhavan Nairum are slated to release.
