Mumbai: Every self-respecting Malayali knows that Avial is a dish of mixed vegetables.
But Avial is also a Malayali rock band, one which is rewriting some rules of music.
The four-member band, which includes a non-Malayali, comprises of Naresh Kamath, Rex Vijayan, Tony John and Mithun Buthenveetil. For the quartet, language is not an issue.
"Language really isn't an issue; music is all it takes,” said Mithun
With elements of Indie rock and folk, embedded in each of the eight songs featured in their first album, Avial has managed to mix to perfection an altogether unique sound, what the band members call ‘Alternative Malayali rock’, with lyrics that are seeped in contemporary issues
“They want to know what we're actually singing in our songs. Those are lots of questions that come but actually there's more intrigue and amazement at how well Malayalam lends itself to rock music,“ said Tony.
“We say ‘avial pyremu’. It means messed up or mixed up situations. It speaks about social issues, mostly social issues like dirty politics to deforestation,” explained Rex.
If a mixture like this sounds as good as it tastes, there won’t be many reasons to complain.
