Srinagar: Liquor baron Dr Vijay Mallya now wants an entry to Rajya Sabha via Kashmir. Mallya is trying to win over Farooq Abdullah and was in Srinagar last week to influence the father-son duo. Mallya says he'll bring more tourism, more flights, more jobs and more revenue to the state.
"We will connect Srinagar to Mumbai, Pune, Ahmadebad and later to Dubai via Delhi. You and I have a role in promoting tourism to Gulmarg which has the best slopes," said Mallaya.
Chief minister Omar Abdullah isn't as agreeable as his father. To begin with, he has shot down Mallya's proposal to resume hop vine cultivation for beer manufacturing.
The decision has silenced tongues that had started a morality debate in sensitive Kashmir.
After Omar said no cheers to Mallya's proposal, friend Farooq Abdullah stepped in, to try and compensate by promising a ticket to parliament. A ticket that may start a fresh controversy in Kashmir.
"It's a political intrusion to the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir," said Srinagar Bar Association's G N Shaheen.
Of the four seats that are up for grabs from the state, the NC has the chance to win two. And if Mallya is able to secure one, it would open a new controversial chapter in Kashmir. To allow a non-state resident to buy a parliament seat. When Article 370 prevents purchase of plots by outsiders in Kashmir.
