Mamata makes Rajdhani crisis a political issue

New Delhi: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock at the manner in which the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express from Bhubaneswar was detained by Maoist-backed activists in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district.

The Minister declined to make a political issue of it even after the train resumed its onward journey.

As developments unfolded through the day, Mamata maintained that the safety of the passengers was the prime concern and it was her duty to coordinate with all concerned to secure the safety of the driver and the passengers.

She was also willing to hold talks with the activists as it was not possible for her to reach the spot immediately.

Noting that the incident was a law and order issue of the state government, Mamata said she was concerned about the railway operation and railway safety.

Even before Maoist-backed activists detained the Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express, an angry Mamata had on Tuesday demanded the end of anti-Maoist operations in her state. She also said that the Union government should prepare the ground for imposing President’s Rule in West Bengal.
