Kolkata: In a surprising move, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee marked late Chief Minister Jyoti Basu's birthday on Friday, ahead of his birth anniversary on Sunday.
"This preponement is in accordance with past precedence. Those who did not attend the programme are indulging in politics for the sake of politics. I visited Jyoti Basu on his birthdays during his final years on his request. I am continuing with that tradition even today," Mamata said.
Mamata garlanded the portrait of the CPI(M) leader on Friday. This did not go down too well with members of CPI(M).

Left legislators stayed away from the programme in protest. They are scheduled to observe the day on Sunday at the Assembly premises.
